LIRE PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS
Reading in and outside the English Language Classroom
DESCRIPTION
Reading is a crucial study skill and a vehicle for cross-curricular learning and developing key competencies in pupils to meet the challenges of the future world. The LIRE practical workshop aims to equip English teachers with skills, methods, and resources to promote extensive reading in the ELT context and thus help pupils advance their reading literacy and critical thinking and language skills. Research studies show that pupils exposed to extensive reading become better and more confident readers. Moreover, they write better, their listening and speaking abilities improve, their vocabularies get richer, and they develop positive attitudes toward learning. The workshop introduces a variety of reading materials and discusses their potential for the classroom; it demonstrates different reading strategies and approaches to reading. It also presents practical activities that can be done in the clasrooms. Further, it offers ideas on integrating reading into the school curriculum and fostering pupils’ reading habits.
